Advantages and disadvantages of oral communication


Oral communication has been defined in various books to mean a process involving the expression of both information and ideas from one person/part to another person/part through word of mouth. this media of communication however has both advantages and disadvantages as stipulated below;

Advantages of oral communication

i. Immediate feedback - Oral communication involves face to face direct conversations and it becomes simple to respond in case response/feedback is required from either of the two parties involving in such conversations.

ii. Non-verbal signals can be used - Gestures, facial expression and body language can easily be interpreted/understood. this adds to the meaning/understanding of the information being shared. in some cases signals speaks more than actual words. 

iii. Voice qualities can be identified - The variation in voices may also add meaning to a message being shared/communicated. voice in this case can be in different forms such as pitch, volume, speed, rhythm, stress, tone etc.

iv. Oral communication is flexible - Content of communication can be varied according to how it suits the individuals/parties involved in it. this saves time and it is more convenient to individuals.

v. Good media for persuasion and convincing - When the aim of communication is to persuade and convince, then oral communication is more appropriate since it involves exchange of views between parties involving in such communication.

vi. Promotes interpersonal relationship - This medium of communication is more human and brings people more close and interactions between them. involves knowing each other properly.

vii. Brief and short - No record need to be prepared unless it need minutes of the conversation to be prepared. otherwise oral communication is so direct hence short and brief.



Disadvantages of oral communication

i.  Disagreements - It can be difficult to control the exchange of conversation in the situation where there is many participants and when there is a disagreements between the parties involving in such oral conversation.

ii. Emotional - Sometime the oral communication can be interrupted by the level of emotional between parties and hence affect success of the this media of communication.

iii. No time to think - During oral communication, there is too little time to think and plan the conversation while listening and talking at the same time. this can as well affect the quality of contribution/ information exchanged between parties. 

iv. Oral information can not be contract - No written record in oral communication thus becomes difficult to establish formal contract between parties only through oral conversation.

v. Ineffective in case of disabilities - Some people with disabilities can not communicate effectivelly with others orally. this hinders the availability of quality information and ideas that could have been delivered by those people.

vi. Fear to be honest - Sonversation involving people from different level of power and authorities may involve some intimidation that may hinder honest and objectivity in giving opinion on face to face conversation as compared to writing communication.
